Considered one of the largest folk festivals in the world, Germany’s Oktoberfest has always been a destination for restless feet desiring to experience the wonder of a living piece of culture, passed down since the early 1800s.
Since its establishment in 2006, Brotzeit has celebrated Oktoberfest annually. Like the original in Munich, the celebration has always been one of joyful revelry – full of good food and good beer, imported specially from Erdinger in Bavaria, one of the six original Munich breweries allowed to serve at Oktoberfest, with games and entertainment to bring in a little of the fairground feel.

No Oktoberfest would be complete without a limited-edition festive beer. This year, Brotzeit will pour the official Erdinger Oktoberfest 2023 brew, imported directly from Erding, Germany.
A masterpiece of brewer’s art, the special Oktoberfestbier combines smooth malt aromas with pronounced hop bitterness. The well-balanced flavours are complemented by gently sparkling carbonic acid to impart the typical liveliness of a genuine wheat beer.
Appearance: Intensively golden yellow, finely distributed cloudiness, fine white froth
Flavour & Mouthfeel: Strong, perfectly rounded body, well-balanced flavour, irresistibly smooth, supple and full-bodied
For discerning drinkers who like to start with an aperitif before progressing to beer or prefer spirits, Brotzeit is bringing in the SLYRS Single MALT Whiskey Oktoberfest Edition.
This unique, limited SLYRS first matured for five years in the SLYRS warehouse and then for a further nine months in selected beer barrels from the Gebrüder Maisel KG brewery, in which unique craft beers with intense, robust flavours were previously stored.

Oktoberfest began as a wedding celebration more than 200 years ago when Bavaria’s Crown Prince Ludwig married Princess Therese of Saxony-Hildburghausen on Oct. 12, 1810. The wedding was celebrated with multiple days of drinking, feasting and horse races. The celebration then became an annual event.
Why Is Drinking So Big At Oktoberfest?
Drinking in Munich in the Fall is no coincidence because it is important to the beer brewing cycle. Dry goods like Hops and Barley come into season in the Fall, so it is traditionally the same time when brewers would buy ingredients and start a new brewing season. To empty their old barrels for the new Fall season, the Breweries used to throw huge parties to get people to drink the last of the Marzen Beer (made in March) at the bottom of the barrels. Because the leftover Marzen beer at the bottom of the barrel was aged much longer than the rest, the beer became much darker and stronger, referred to as Dunkel.
How is Bavarian beer different?
While there are over 40 types and 4000 brands, a true Bavarian is held to strict brewing standards. These rules are called the Bavarian Purity Law (Reinheitsgebot) of 1516, which limits the ingredients and regulates how the beer is made. The result has been some of the best and most consistent beer in the World. Bavarian beer is known for its full flavour and higher alcohol percentage but also has more sugar than usual. It tastes great, but if you aren’t used to it you will have a massive hangover the first day unless you drink enough water, as the recipe can only include barley, malt, yeast, and hops.
